The Mother Hub Mingle: Making it WORK

The Mother Hub Mingle: Making it WORK

On Wednesday 8th March 2017 we celebrated International Women's Day by hosting our first Mother Hub Mingle event at The Brentwood Kitchen in Brentwood, Essex. The event was a chance for women to get together, make new connections and participate in a live panel discussion and Q&A around the topic of 'Making it Work'.

We welcomed four speakers - all of them women (who happen to be mothers) who are making their careers work for them. Our brilliant panel including Jess Clarke (Talent Development Specialist at Bloomberg LP), Hannah Wylie (Senior Lawyer at Universal Pictures), Amy Newland (Education Manager at Kip McGrath and Director at Vivid Theatre Productions) and Natalie Reynolds (founder of Fred & Noah).

The Nonna's cake: A perfect Sunday bake

The Nonna's cake: A perfect Sunday bake

Sunday is baking day in our house, and this beauty is the perfect Sunday bake. I got the recipe for this delicious cake from my sister's Italian mother in law, or Nonna as we have all affectionately come to call her, even my kiddos! Most people would break into a sweat when cooking for large numbers but she's the kind of woman who makes a three course meal for twenty seem like no bother at all, and always serves up the most incredible food at family gatherings. We never visite Italy without stopping by "The Nonni's house" and are always guaranteed to leave with a wonderful recipe or two. This apple cake is one of many gorgeous recipes that have been passed down through the women in her family for generations and once you've tasted it you'll know just why!

The Mother Hub Meets: Erica Davies

The Mother Hub Meets: Erica Davies

Today on the Mother Hub we're chatting to Erica Davies, creative extraordinaire and founder of fashion and lifestyle blog, The Edited. Erica started her career as a fashion assistant but quickly worked her way up to editor. In fact, when she was offered the role of Fashion Editor for The Sun newspaper at the tender age of twenty-four, she was, at the time, the youngest person to have held that position on Fleet Street. After spending fifteen years working on national newspapers and fashion magazines, today Erica works works full-time on The Edited, her own award-nominated fashion and lifestyle blog. Her inimitable style and fresh approach to fashion has gained her a loyal following, including everyone here at The Mother Hub! And, as is clear from the amazing interior design and style of her new home in Essex, it turns out her creative talents are not limited to fashion. Suffice to say that a rug by La Redoute that she featured on her blog last year gained such popularity that it now has its own Instagram account and has been nicknamed, 'The Erica Rug'! To find out more about Erica's amazing career journey, how fashion journalism has changed and what it feels like to set up on your own, then this interview is a must read!

The Mother Hub Meets: Amelia Rope

The Mother Hub Meets: Amelia Rope

If some people are born with entrepreneurship in their DNA, then Amelia Rope, founder of luxury chocolate brand Amelia Rope chocolates, is surely one of them. Amelia grew up near Maldon in Essex (she still uses Maldon sea salt in her chocolate), and took on a series of PA roles in her twenties, but she always knew she wanted to be working for herself. After two appearances on Masterchef, and a 5-day chocolate course by French luxury chocolate makers Valrhona, she set up Amelia Rope Chocolates in 2007... and the rest, as they say, is history!  You can now find Amelia's luxury chocolates in retailers across the globe, from Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason in London to Aya Cocoa in Kuwait.
