New season = new wardrobe! With the kids back at school and a definite chill in the air, it’s time to hunt down the key pieces you’ll need for the autumn months ahead. It’s all about finding the perfect items to suit both you and your lifestyle, but where to start?! With stores packed with new season stuff, the search for the perfect autumn purchases could be overwhelming. But have no fear! We've asked our fashion contributor, Jo Sawkins, to give us a low-down on the latest wearable trends, including her new season must-haves, which are guaranteed to keep you ahead of the style game this autumn.
Black and white check is a classic. This versatile trend looks just as good smartened up for a business meeting as it does teamed with ripped jeans and a statement tee for an "edgier" look. The check coat is the perfect new season wardrobe hit and gives added interest to any outfit, whilst the check trouser can be your alternative to the black trouser office uniform. Team with a crisp white shirt, bright knit or print clash with polka dots or leopard for a simple and versatile wardrobe update.
Velvets, satins and shaggy faux fur give a nod to the '70s trend. Wide leg denim culottes with boots and a cool cut coat are perfect for daytime, whilst a super sleek satin dress and sumptuous velvet blazer will turn it up for night time. Opt for a colour palette of burnt oranges and smoky reds and keep accessories simple.
Take a darker road with your florals this season and opt for an autumnal palette of emerald greens and berry reds. Mix in a flash of vibrancy with punchy yellows worn with denim, or team a floral dress with slouchy knee high boots and a tough biker or chic blazer. Clash your florals too, or layer with a stripe tee for a statement look.
RED ON RED
If you’re only seen in one colour this season, make sure it’s red. And then clash it with some more red! Head-to-toe dressing is key to nailing this look, so be brave and go for it. Too much for you? Then go for a red trouser and red boot combo, or red top under a red blazer. However you wear it, keep it tonal and layered.
